Are you preparing for travel and prefer not to carry your full makeup kit? Ever wondered how you can get more out of the makeup you currently have when on a budget?
If your answer is yes to any of the above, this minimalist guide to makeup is for you!
1. Try Foundation as Concealer
Use additional layers of foundation on blemishes as if it were concealer. This works best if you have minor blemishes and use a medium to heavy coverage foundation. For example, I use the L’Oreal Infallible Stay Fresh Foundation for everyday coverage and add a little more over acne and dark circles.
You can mix a little eyeshadow into the foundation for colour correction. For instance, a small amount of orange eyeshadow mixed in helps correct dark circles on warm undertones.
2. Use Lipstick as Blush
An oldie but a goodie, lipsticks work well as cream blush. You’ll always look put together with your lip and blush colours in sync, and not have to fuss about which shades work well together. I find this works best with creamier lipsticks, which helps them blend smoothly over the cheeks (e.g. L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick).
3. Explore Eyeshadow as Contour
Simple and effective, just be sure the eyeshadow is an appropriate contour shade for your skin tone. An endless selection of browns and taupes abound, there’s something for everyone.
4. Use Eyeshadow as Eyeliner
Dampen an angled brush and start with eyeshadow primer as the base for best results. This opens up a whole new world of colourful eyeliner options too. Note that this will give more natural results similar to an eyeliner pencil.
5. Try Eyeshadow as Highlighter
Love that champagne eyeshadow that brings your eyes to life? You can bet it will kiss your skin with that amazing highlighter glow. Dust it widely with a small fluffy brush. I’ve gotten bright highlights with the champagne shade in Wet n Wild’s Colour Icon Palette and more subtle results with Revlon Colourstay’s Looks Book Palette.
If you’ve started to wonder about optimising the amount of money or space going towards your makeup routine, it’s time to explore a minimalist approach.
